Research shows good posture has effects on our health and maximises the efficiency in which our bodies function. Good posture can help with digestion, breathing, minimising injury and joint pain, and even has positive effects on mental health.
Proper posture allows the internal organs to be in their natural position without any extra and unnecessary pressure, which can interrupt normal function of the digestive system. Bad or slouched posture affects the effectiveness and ease of breathing – if we sit or stand with rounded shoulders and a forward head, the muscles around the chest are caused to tighten which limits the ability of the rib cage to expand. The diaphragm is also restricted in its contractions and expansions and as a result, we take rapid, shallow breaths.
Good posture keeps our bones and joints in correct alignment, minimising the effects of gravity on joints and muscles. This allows muscles to activate and work correctly, decreasing the pressure and wear on joints which can lead to arthritis or joint pain. With muscles working at their most efficient levels, they use less energy and muscle fatigue is minimised. Muscle strain and back pain are also prevented. Mental health also benefits from proper posture as it opens the airways and creates more effective and efficient breathing, which can help to calm, reduce stress and anxiety and lower blood pressure.
There are many benefits to strengthening your core while focussing on a correct and strong posture. The core works to stabilise your entire body, so strengthening it can help with alignment on the spine and other joints. This helps alleviate back pain, as the spine is better supported and mobility is increased. Core strength also improves balance, making daily movements safer, as you have better control of your muscles and can find your centre of gravity much more easily to help stabilise yourself.
